Calculate

Hi

I find when an excel spreadsheet sometimes gets to a point when it refuses to automatically calculate - "calculate" appears to the left of the bottom toolbar and you have to manually hit F9 in order for the spreadhseet to re-calculate.

Can you tell me why this occurs and how I can get the spreadhseet to automatically calculate again when this happens.

Cheers
NICK

RE: Calculate

Hi Nick,

You have an option in Excel under the Tools menu down to Options go to the Calculation tab there you can change the functions to calculate automatically or manually. Manually only works when you press F9

I have never seen the need to calculate manually!!, could you let me know if you use this function and if so why...

RE: Calculate

Thanks Tracey, I don't voluntarily use this function, sometimes when I am working in a large workbook with plenty of formulas is will 'default' to manual

Thanks for your tip, I have changed back to automatic now.

RE: Calculate

Thanks for letting me know, I know about the option but haven't really seen the point for it!! Handy to know

If there is anything else, do let me know

Tracy

Excel tip:

Conditional Formatting in Excel 2010

If you have lots of data in a spreadsheet, you may find that it is easier to read if you highlight some of the values. This is Conditional Formatting and here's how to use it:

1) Select the data you wish to apply the format to and click Conditional Formatting
2) A list of options will then appear, from this list, choose the format you wish to display e.g. find all cells with a value less than 0
3) Excel will then highlight all of these cells

To remove this: select the highlighted cells, click the drop down on the Conditional Formatting icon and select Clear Rules from selected cells.
