T test, non-numeric data error message

I am trying to do a t test on excel and when I put all the necessary cell numbers in the ranges, the calculation will not execute due to 'input range contains non-numeric data'. All the cells have numbers in them and I even changed the format of all the cells to Number. None of the cells I have chosen have text in them. Is there anything else I can try to get the t test to run? Thanks, Alan

RE: T test, non-numeric data error message

Hi Alan,

Thank you for the forum question.

If you type in formatting Excel can see it as text not a number. There can be a number of reason for Excel will see it as text. What I would do is to add a column and type =isnumber(A2) if my column with the numbers starts from A2 otherwise change the cell reference. Copy it down and if the function return false it is text and if it returns true it is a number. this way you can find the numbers which are text.

A more simple solution is to change the column width to double size. If the numbers left align it is text if they right align it is numbers.

If you copy the column with numbers and past them in a new file I am happy to have a look at it.

You can send the file to:

Excel tip:

Conditional Formatting in Excel 2010

If you have lots of data in a spreadsheet, you may find that it is easier to read if you highlight some of the values. This is Conditional Formatting and here's how to use it:

1) Select the data you wish to apply the format to and click Conditional Formatting
2) A list of options will then appear, from this list, choose the format you wish to display e.g. find all cells with a value less than 0
3) Excel will then highlight all of these cells

To remove this: select the highlighted cells, click the drop down on the Conditional Formatting icon and select Clear Rules from selected cells.
