Excel chart

Hi!

In an Excel chart with dates on the x axis where the data format is mmm yyyy, how can you ensure that the label of the x axis show mmm and yyyy on 2 lines, one above the other?

Sometimes the yyyy text moves down to a second line by itself; sometimes the text stays on one line and crosses over the previous unit.

Many thanks,
Fay

RE: Excel chart

Hi Fay,

Thank you for the forum question.

You can force Excel to show the labels in two lines if is not date formatted YYYY MMMM.

If the months and years were text formatted you can place your courser in the source column between the month and the year and press Alt + Enter. Then you will get a line break in the source column and this will also give you a forced line break in the chart.

Otherwise you will need a column for the year and a column for the month.

It is not the best solution but unfortunately the only options.

Kind regards

Excel tip:

Quickly hide and unhide rows and columns

Use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+9 to hide selected rows and Ctrl+0 to hide selected columns. The good thing about this shortcut is that you do not need to select entire rows or columns. For example, select B3:D3 then press Ctrl+0 to hide columns B to D.

Ctrl+Shift+9 unhides rows and Ctrl+Shift+0 unhides columns.
