Conditional Formatting not working

I have this formula in a Conditional fomat rule ="$C2<42". I have this applying to $A$2:$C$61, where the C column contains various numbers between 0 and 48. I have the format set to fill Red and font yellow

What happens? Nothing. No row is formatted. The same happens if I apply the rule to just the C column.

Help!

RE: Conditional Formatting not working

Hi Richard,

Thank you for the forum question.

Select the range A2:C61 in the worksheet and type the formula =$C2<42 in the box "Format values where this formula is true".

You are very close as you can see but never use double quotes, if you want Excel to understand values.

Kind regards

RE: Conditional Formatting not working

Thanks Jens, that worked just fine. I think I was confused as the system kept put quotes around what was after the '=' sign.

Excel tip:

Generating Random Numbers

To generate a random number in Excel use the = RAND() function.

The value returned will always be between 0 and 1. To convert this to some other random value, you will need to multiply the result by the highest number you want to consider. For example, if you wanted a random number between 1 and 25, you could use the following code line:
= INT(25 * RAND()+ 1)

Since RAND() will always returns a value between 0 and 1 (but never 1 itself), multiplying what it returns by 25 and then using the Integer function INT on that result will return a whole number between 0 and 24.

Finally, 1 is added to this result, so that x will be equal to a number between 1 and 25, inclusive
