Insert new row - large operation error message

When trying to insert a new row to a large spreadsheet I receive an error message named 'Large operation' and the workbook freezes, crashes and no changes are made.

There are extra columns outside the working space at the moment which I can't delete/clear to reduce the size of the worksheet as it crashes instantly with the same error message popping up.

RE: Insert new row - large operation error message

Hi Kate,

Thank you for the forum question.

Save the workbook as a binary workbook.

Open the workbook click Save as and from the Save as type list select Excel Binary Workbook. This will make the file smaller and easier to amend.

There can be a lot of reasons why the file is giving you the problems. If you want me to have a look at it, you can forward it to:

RE: Insert new row - large operation error message

Hello
I am Kate's colleague.
I believe you've pointed out that CONTRL + END goes to the last working cell - and in this problem spreadsheet that is IU x 6472.
What I still don't understand is

1. why these empty and entirely unused cells are defined as "working"?
2. why isn't the END the place where our content ends?
3. how can we delete the empty cells and align the END with our data?
4. how can we avoid any future newly created templates suffering the same issue?

Can you advise please?
Many thanks

Excel tip:

Turn off AutoComplete in Excel

You may have noticed when typing into your spreadsheets that if you start to enter labels that begin with the same letters as a label that has been previously entered in the same spreadsheet, Excel will try and automatically complete the text for you. This feature is called AutoComplete.

If you find this feature more annoying than useful, you can turn it off by:

1. Going to Tools - Options.

2. Select the Edit tab.

3. Remove the tick from next to the "Enable AutoComplete for cell values" option.

4. Click OK.
