Restricting users

How to restrict users to edit ranges.

RE: Restricting users

Hi Liz

Sorry for not replying sooner.

Yes Excel allows specific ranges to be password protected. Then users that know the password can edit those ranges. To restrict ranges in this way:

1. Open your Excel file to protect and select
Review, Allow User to Edit Ranges

2. Click the New button

3. Enter a title for the range (or leave as Range1) then select the range of cells to restrict. Use the Ctrl key to select more than one range.

4. Type a range password then re-enter the password.

5. Finally click on Protect Sheet and enter a password to protect the whole worksheet.

After doing this locked cells are protected from users making changes. Specific ranges can be edited by users that know the range password.

If you want to modify or remove ranges click you need to unprotect the worksheet then click Allow User to Edit Ranges and click either Modify or Delete.

It is also possible to add permissions so specific users to edit without a password. To do that click the Permissions button for that range and enter their Windows user name. (Use Check Names to verify it is a valid name).

I hope that helps with your question.

Regards
Doug
