Want to automatically enter a sum based on matching text

I woudl like to compare two monthly budgets so that I can automatically generate the variances from month to month. The rows are labelled the same from one month to the next. eg if the text in column B matches I want to pull the number from column C

RE: Want to automatically enter a sum based on matching text

Hi Katy,

Thank you for the forum question.

I am not sure I understand what you want but if you want to subtract two cells if the text is matching you can use the If function.

=If(sheets1!b2=sheets2!b2,sheets2!c2-sheets1!c2,"Not matching")

Please let me know if this is what you want. If not please come back. If you want me to have a look at you worksheet you can forward it to me.

Kind regards

Excel tip:

The Easiest Way to See a Sum or Average in Excel 2010

Did you know the quickest and most simple way of working out the average or sum of a set of numbers?

Highlight numbers in cells or type some numbers in cells and then look at the status bar at the bottom of the window. Here you will see a display of the average of the numbers, as well as a count of the cells and the sum of these cells.
