Opening a workbook

how do I open a workout on read only on excel 2013. this was much easier on 2010. also, how do I password protect a sheet with a read only option? thanks!

RE: Opening a workbook

Hi Nicholas,

Thank you for your post. When you double-click on a read-only file to open it, it opens in your default Excel version. A yellow security bar shows at the top of the sheet with a button which says "Edit anyway". Clicking this button enables you to make changes.

It also says [Read only] in the title bar at the top. If none of these things appear, the sheet is not "Read only".

If the sheet does not open, it might be protected with a password.

To password-protect a worksheet, click the "Review" tab on the ribbon, then click Protect Sheet. Type and retype your password. Others will be able to open the workbook but can't make any changes.

I hope this helps.

Kind regards

Excel tip:

Activating the formula bar with the keyboard in Excel 2010

The formula bar in Excel 2010 contains a number of different formulas. However, it is time consuming to open the formula bar every time and insert the formula using the mouse. Instead, you can activate the formula bar with the keyboard. Simply press the F2 button on the keyboard then the information in the cell will expand allowing you to edit the information in the cell.
