Broken Column Chart

I am trying to create a Broken Column chart for something that I am working on. The bar graph itself contains 58 points that need to be plotted (I would like the bar chart to be plotted in order from the largest number to the smallest). The reason why we need to plot a Broken Column chart is because one of the figures is significantly larger then the other figures.

The largest figure is a value if 230, with the next largest value being 61. I would like the break of the graph to start at 100 and to resume at 200, with numbering on the Y-Axis to go from -100 (smallest figure is -78) to 250, with the axis being labeled after intervals of 50.

I would like the graph to look similar to the the column bar graph in the following link http://alesandrab.wordpress.com/2014/03/17/broken-column-and-bar-charts/

I have made an attempt at this myself, but it can get a bit confusing near the end. Any help on this is greatly appreciated. I have listed the 58 figures below.

Regards
Nasir

RE: Broken Column Chart

Hi Nasir

Sorry for taking so long to reply. The broken bar method is quite tricky and time consuming to create.

Can I suggest a different approach suggested by Jon Peltier?

http://peltiertech.com/broken-y-axis-in-excel-chart/

He suggests a Panel Chart rather than a broken axis.

If you want help with your Broken Column example it would help to send what you have created so far to info@stl-training.co.uk and ask to forward to Doug.

RE: Broken Column Chart

Hi Doug,

Thanks for getting back to me. I managed to work out how to create the Broken Column chart as per the method in my original post by myself. It was a little bit complicated but I managed to figure it out.

I have come across the link you posted and this method also seems to be a little messy. Thanks for your help on this.

Kind regards
Nasir

RE: Broken Column Chart

Well done Nasir for creating the broken column chart. It seemed to becoming time consuming with so many data points. I will set up a small example with 5 bars for others to try.

Thanks for your question and for letting us know you solved it yourself!

Excel tip:

Remove unused toolbar buttons

Are there buttons on your Excel toolbars that you never use? Remove them from the toolbar by doing the following:

1. Go to Tools - Customise - Commands.
2. Select the toolbar button you wish to remove, then use your mouse to drag and drop the button into the Excel window. When you release your finger from the mouse, the button will disappear.
