Creating a pivot table

I'm trying to create a pivot table. I've selected my data range but I'm getting 'Data source reference is not valid' as a pop up. What am I doing wrong?

RE: Creating a pivot table

Hello Jane,

You might be getting the error ‘Data Source Reference is not valid’ because you might not be selecting the correct range before clicking on Pivot table.

Otherwise, if you have any empty cells or any graphics in the range you have selected, you may also get this error message.

I am assuming your data columns all have headings.

I hope this solves your problem.

Kind regards

RE: Creating a pivot table

Yep those were all the things that I thought of. There are no blank columns and I've tried making the header row bold or not to pick it out - all to no avail. The data is exported from a web-based bit of software, but I can see nothing about the data that should make it problematic.

Is there a facility for me to send the sheet to you so you can have a look? I'm sure I must be missing something completely basic, but I can't work out what it is.

Jane

Excel tip:

Quick Absolute Cell References

When entering cell references in a formula you probably click the cell, or you may type in the cell reference. If you require any of the 4 variations, press the F4 key now before you press Enter to toggle around the relative and absolute entries ($signs).

Note that the F4 key outside of editing a formula is the Repeat key to repeat a previous action.
