How do you create a database for 50 employees that counts in a total box at the end... eg. by entering sick it would count as 1 each time etc. But also being able to achieve this without having to have every single date across the top.

Thank you for your question and welcome to the forum.
In a cell try and use a CountIF function. Please find the attached spreadsheet.
In essence what the formula does is to count the number of cells in a range that contain the word sick. So it sees each cell with sick in it as a number.
