Converting Text to Columns
We have to run a daily report in Summit, copy and paste the data into Excel and convert the text into columns, using the Tab as a separator.
In Excel 2003 we just highlight the first column and select Data->Text to Columns. It takes seconds. In Excel 2007, we can find no way to get this to work: the Text to Columns option is always greyed out. We have tried selecting the whole document, deleting the headings and/or blank rows and doing it in small chunks.
The problem is that only one person in the department has Excel 2003 so in her absence nobody will be able to run the report.
Thanks very much in advance.
RE: Converting Text to Columns
Hi Suzanne,
Thank you for your question.
It is hard to see why the action is greyed out without seeing a part of the file. Is it possible to send me part of the file with data and headings so I can check it out.
It may be the way Excel 2007 interprets the data maybe it is not seeing it as text?
If it is possible can you please send it to me at:

RE: Converting Text to Columns
Hi Barry,
Thank you for your response.
I was waiting for a small part of the file with maybe the sensitive data changed.
I can't locate the file if you did send it.
However, the problem maybe that you have multiple sheets selected. If you look at the sheet tabs, does it look like there are multiple sheets selected?(more than one sheet will have white backgrounds). Also on the Application Title bar at the top of the screen, you will see the filename. Has it got the word 'Group' after it?
If so, right click over each of the sheet tabs until you see th option 'Ungroup sheets' and when found click on it. The word group will then be removed from the title bar and the option will no longer be greyed out.
I hope this helps.

Simon

RE: Converting Text to Columns
Hi Suzanne,
Just wondering how you are getting on after my responses.
Did you check whether the sheets were in group mode? This is one of the only things I can think of that would have greyed that option out.
Let me know as I want to make sure we do all we can to resolve it. The other option is to try and convert the file first to the latest version via the Office button and convert.
