Counting items in a cell

I have a long list of companies and banks who have done deals with them all in one cell. I need to be able to count the items in each cell.

It's a long list so manual is not an option. Example

Column A Column B
Bharat Forge Royal bank of
Scotland
Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi
Credit Agricole

Orange Deutsche Bank
JP Morgan
Citigroup
UBS

I need to get an answer ASAP

Thanks

Michelle

RE: Counting items in a cell

Hello Michelle,

Thank you for your question regarding counting items in a cell.

You say that you have 'a long list of companies and banks who have done deals with them, all in one cell' and now you want to count the items in each cell. First you say they are all in one cell!

Your request is confusing, so I'm going to take the liberty of suggesting that possibly you wish to count how many cells in column A contain text data and also how many cells in column B contain text data. If this is correct you can do the following:

1) Choose the cell where you require the result to appear for column A.
2) Enter the following formula =COUNTA(Range) replacing the word Range with the full data range i.e. A2:A578
3) Now do the same for the data in column B.

The quickest way to select a long range is to click the first cell of the range and then hold the CTRL+Shift keys down together, then press the down-arrow.

If this not what you want please be more specific.

I hope this resolves your question. If it has, please mark this question as resolved.

If you require further assistance, please reply to this post. Or perhaps you have another Microsoft Office question?

Have a great day.
