RE: bodmas

Hi Paul

thanks for your question,

BODMAS describes the sequence to follow when evaluating a formula. It stands for:

(B)rackets
(O)rder - i.e. to the power of
(D)ivision
(M)ultiplication
(A)ddition
(S)ubtraction

This means that when faced with a formula such as:

7 + 6 x 3

we can guide Excel to generate the result we require. As it stands the above formula could be calculated to equal
39 or 25

Using brackets we parcel up the elements to be calculated before the multiplication is applied

(7 + 6) x 3 = 13 x 3

Following BODMAS
this will result in 39

I hope this helps - do let us know if you have any further questions.

Kind regards,
Andrew

Excel tip:

Multiple Lines of Text in a Cell

As an alternative to the Text Wrapping facility, type a word or two, press Alt+Enter to get a new line, type more text, and continue the process for as many lines as you need. Enter as normal when you have finished.

The line break is not affected by changing the column width, as text wrapping. To remove this you must edit the cell and remove the invisible character and replace with a normal space.
