Forms

Hi,

I was wondering if there is any way of creating a simple form in excel? I recently attended the word course and learnt how to create forms. Basically all I want to do is have a set text in a cell which says something like "type answer here" and when someone clicks on the text they can type their answer.

A factor to consider is that I already have text in the cell where I would like to insert the form text.

Many thanks!

RE: Forms

Hi Ali

Thanks for your question.

If you have a cell that says Type answer here, someone can just click in the cell and replace the text with their answer.

Otherwise you could consider:

- the data validation feature, which allows you to set up dropdown arrows that people can select an option from.

- there is a Forms toolbar in Excel that you could access and play around with.

RE: Forms

Hi Amanda,

Thanks for your response. Unfortunately your first solution will not work as I already have other text in the cells which needs to remain there. I also cannot use your second solution as dropdowns would be of no use.

Forms isn't really what I was after - sorry, I should have been more specific. Basically thinking about it now what I really want to ask is if there is a field option in excel like there is in word?

Thanks,
Ali

RE: Forms

Hi Ali

Just to clarify, do you want to be able to have areas of the spreadsheet where people can enter information, and other areas where they can't enter information?

thanks
Amanda

RE: Forms

Amanda,

Yes, ultimately I'd like the spreadsheet to be locked except for the fields (where they can click and type). Perhaps it would look a little something like this, but please note that each line represents one cell:

Ali - [type answer here]
Amanda - [type answer here]

I would like to be able to insert the field "type answer here" into the cell and for the user to be able to click (or double click) on the field and be able to type without deleting the rest of the text in the box (ie Ali - or Amanda - ).

I can't find a Field option anywhere in Excel so am not sure that my request is actually possible.. but you never know!

Thanks,
Ali

RE: Forms

Hi Ali

For what you are wanting to do, you would have to have a separate cell for where the person typed their answer. So Ali would be in one cell, Amanda would be in another cell in the next row down, then you would have a cell next door to each of these that could be made editable.

So sorry, the short answer is no, you couldn't set up a spreadsheet in the same way you can set up forms in a Word document.

thanks
Amanda

RE: Forms

Not to worry - thanks for taking the time to check for me anyway!

RE: Forms

Hi Ali

No problem, have a good weekend.

Excel tip:

Hiding Formulae in the Formula Bar

It is possible to protect the contents of a cell reference(s) from amendment by applying cell protection. The contents of the cell reference can also be stopped from displaying in the formula bar.

Step 1: Select Format > Cells > Protection.

Step 2: Tick Hidden option. Ensure Locked is ticked

Step 3: Select Tools > Protection > Protect Sheet

(Ensure "Protect worksheet and contents of locked cells" is ticked)
