Formuals and Functions

I want to understand how to use the fx key.

RE: Formuals and Functions

Hello Deorne

Thank you for your question and welcome to the forum.

Are you referring to the fx button that is up near the top of the screen in Excel; or the function keys (e.g. F1, F2 etc) on the keyboard?

Amanda

RE: Formuals and Functions

Hello Amanda,

I'm referring to the fx button as you've suggested.

Many thanks
Deorne

RE: Formuals and Functions

Hi Deorne

Thanks for clarifying.

The fx button is referred to as the Insert Function button.

It's purpose is to allow you to search for and insert functions into a spreadsheet.

If you select the cell where you want the function to go in your spreadsheet, then click the Insert Function button, you will then be able to search for a function (e.g. IF function).

Then you select the function you wish to use from the options presented, and click OK.

At the following screen, you will be presented with the parts of the function (called arguments) that you need to enter into the function in order to obtain a result. Some functions have more arguments than others. Once you have filled in all the arguments, then click OK and if Excel can figure out a result for you based on the arguments you have entered, then this will display in the spreadsheet.

Kind regards
Amanda

Hi Amanda,

Thank you for explaining how this works. I know this will be relevant in my new role.

I'm happy for this to be resolved.

Kind regards,
Deorne

Excel tip:

Creating custom lists

In Excel if you type in January in a cell, you can then copy this cell to replicate Febraury, MArch, April etc.

This list has come from Tools- options and Custom lists.

Therefore to save time and create your own list you can click on New (in Tools and custom list tab) and type out the lsit that you want copied quickly.

All you have to do is then type in the 1st word and you will be able to copy the rest of the list quickly.
