Do you always have to put " before text if you want excel to know it is a word?

RE: Formatting

Hi Faye

Thank you for your question and welcome to the forum.

If the first thing you type into a cell is a letter, then it is not necessary to enter a single quotation mark (') at the beginning as Excel will automatically recognise the letter as text.

Use ' before you type in a number, if you want Excel to recognise what you are typing in as text rather than a number. This is particularly useful if you are entering a number with leading zeros.

Excel tip:

Multiple Lines of Text in a Cell

As an alternative to the Text Wrapping facility, type a word or two, press Alt+Enter to get a new line, type more text, and continue the process for as many lines as you need. Enter as normal when you have finished.

The line break is not affected by changing the column width, as text wrapping. To remove this you must edit the cell and remove the invisible character and replace with a normal space.
