It is probably easiest to explain this with an example. Say you have the number 1 entered into cell A1 in a spreadsheet; and the number 2 entered into B1.

If in cell C1 you entered =a1+b1 and pressed Enter, this would give you the result of adding the contents of A1 and B1 together (in this example, 3).

Replacing the + in the formula above with a * will the contents of A1 and B1 together; a / will divide; and - will subtract.
