What are the primary differences between Excel 2003 and 2007?

And is it essentially an identical program on a Macintosh?

RE: Editions of Excel

Hi Edward

Thank you for your question; and welcome to the forum.

The biggest difference between Excel 2003 and 2007 is the interface. The menu bar and toolbars in 2003 have been replaced with other elements, the Office button, Quick Access toolbar and Ribbon.

There are some additions and changes to features, e.g. you can preview formatting changes before you actually select them; the facility for creating charts has been improved; there is a table feature which is useful for sorting and filtering data; and conditional formatting has been changed.

If you were using Excel on a Macintosh, the functionality of Excel is exactly the same, i.e. will have the same features as Excel on a Windows/PC platform.

Apparently the 2004 version for Mac is most similar to the 2003 version; and the 2008 version for Mac is most similar to the 2007 version.

You can have a look at the 2007 version, using a simulated online version at

I hope this helps.

Excel tip:

Adding Rows or Columns in an Excel 2010 Worksheet

If you want to add a row to an Excel spreadsheet, these are the simple steps you should take:

With your mouse, right click on the row header below where you want the new row to be added. Then, click Insert.

Follow exactly the same steps if you want to add a column to an Excel worksheet, right click on the column header, choose Insert and the new column will be inserted to the left of the selected column.
