A PowerPoint Master slide not working as a slide

I have to put six identical text boxes one under the other on a Master slide. I inserted a textbox placeholder for the first box, changed the font size from 16 to 9 to get enough text in each box, and changed the bullet point type to the one I wanted. I also dragged the box out slightly on the righthand size for the optimum fit. Then I copied the boxes one by one down the page to get six of them identical.

When I closed the Master slide view and selected this layout as a slide, the first of the six boxes retained the changes I made, but the other five boxes had reverted to font size 16 and the default bullet style. Also, the boxes were smaller, as they had not retained the resizing I did.

How can I get this to work? I even tried deleting the second box and redoing it like the first box, but when I closed the Master and went back to the slide, it didn't change.

RE: A PowerPoint Master slide not working as a slide

Hello Liz,

Thank you for your question regarding using the PowerPoint master slide as a slide.

The Master slide, which is at the top of the list should not be used to create layouts. The master slide governs the majority of the layouts for the title, footers and common placeholders.

It looks as if you are trying to create a special layout. All you have to do is click the Slide Master button in the View ribbon and from the Edit Master group click 'Insert Layout'. Then click the lower half of the 'Insert Placeholder' button in the Master Layout group. Select the Text option and click and drag on the new layout slide to the size you require. This adds 5 bulleted levels - delete the levels you don't want then edit the bullets according to your own choice. Change the font size of the placeholder and you are now ready to copy & paste.

Select the border of your formatted placeholder and copy then paste 5 times. Drag each placeholder to a suitable position and then select all 6 placeholders, from the Format ribbon click the Align button in the Arrange group and click align left. Then click the Align button again and this time click Distribute Vertically. Your placeholders are now evenly distributed and correctly aligned.

Now close the Slide Master and select a new slide using the newly created layout. Does it work for you? It should.

If you still have any problems with this, please send me your file and I'll take a look at it and come back to you with necessary repairs.
