Why is it that two outlook versions can not be installed on the same pc?

RE: Outlook

Hello Elvis,

Hope you enjoyed your Microsoft 2010 Office Upgrade course with Best STL.

Thank you for your question regarding the problem you are having installing two versions of Outlook on the same PC.

Microsoft does not allow it. The only way you can do it is if you have a multiboot system which has more than one operating system. You would then install an office version on one platform and then the other version on a different platform.

I hope this resolves your question. If it has, please mark this question as resolved.

If you require further assistance, please reply to this post. Or perhaps you have another Microsoft Office question?

Have a great day.

RE: Outlook

Hi Elvis,

Yes, thanks for the question. I think you are talking about the fact that your group had to use a Virtual Machine on the course to use Outlook 2010.

This is because, as Rodney said, Microsoft only allows one copy of Outlook installed at the same time. With the other MS Office applications such as Excel, Word, Access (and even Visio and Project) you can have more than one version installed.

As Microsoft say here, "You can have only one version of Microsoft Outlook installed on your computer"...
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook-help/keep-earlier-versions-of-office-programs-when-installing-office-2010-HA102597134.aspx

I think it's because the Mail settings are integrated into Windows (ie. through control panel) and it uses information from Outlook as well, so it can't cope with multiple versions. Having said that, you can have Outlook Express and Outlook at the same time, so I don't really know.

As a training company, we had to decide what was going to be trained the most. At the time of the IT set up, it was version 2003, which is why that version was installed on the machine, and your group had to use a Virtual machine to access a copy of Outlook 2010.

Hope this clears things up.

Let us know if you have any other Office 2010 questions, we'll be happy to help.

Regards, Rich
