Shading on bar charts in PPT 2007
Hi,
In pre-2007 versions of Powerpoint it was possible to apply a gradient to graphs without specifying the stops e.g. you could have a blue bar, apply a vertical gradient and it would give you shaddows at the edge of the bar so that it looked rounded (Fill Effects> Gradient)
Is there a way to get the same effect in Office 2007? I have tried using the stops but a) it's convoluted and b) the effect isn't exactly the same. NB. There are no suitable pre-set gradients so this is not an option.
Thanks,
Claire
RE: Shading on bar charts in PPT 2007
Hi Claire,
Thank you for your question regarding gradients.
In 2007 the way gradients are dealt with is either by using the preset gradient colours with the gradient type (i.e rectangular, linear etc) or using the gradient stops and applying your own colours for those gradient areas.
A possible suggestion to achieve the same look as your pre-2007 charts would be to:
1. Select the data series (blue bar).
2. On the ribbon, select the 'Chart Tools - Format' tab.
3. In the 'Shape Styles' group, click the drop-down arrow & select the blue style on the last row (Intense effect - Accent 1)
4. On the right-hand side of that gallery drop-down, you should see a smaller button called 'Shape Fill' - select that button and then select 'Gradient'
5. From the gallery that presents itself, hover over the different gradients to see if any of these match your requirements otherwise at the bottom of the gallery select 'More Gradients.'
6. Select the 'Fill' category (on the left-hand side)
7. Select 'Gradient Fill'
8. Type: Linear
9. Have a look in the 'Direction' drop-down menu to see if any of these styles match your requirements otherwise....
10. Change the 'Angle' to 180 degrees
11. 'Gradient Stop 1' - Change colour to a darker colour
12. 'Gradient stop 3' - Change to the same darker colour
13. You have the option of scrolling the 'Stop Position' scroll bar to alter where the gradients start & finish.
I hope this helps, if it has, please mark this question as resolved.

RE: Shading on bar charts in PPT 2007
As I explained in my initial message, the method using gradient stops does not give the same results. Is there an alternative?
Thanks
RE: Shading on bar charts in PPT 2007
In 2007 the only way of dealing with gradients is using the options highlighted above (from drop-down galleries or using the gradient fills to create your own specific gradient style.)
The only other option that may be of some help is to select the data series and in the 'Chart Tools - Format' tab, click the 'Shape Effects' button, select an option from the 'Bevel' category.
