File Formats

What are the differences between JPEG, GIF Files and other files like these. Why are there different ones and what is best for different tasks like sending oictures, emailing, viewing on the net?

RE: File Formats

Hi Paul,

There are different image file formats, yes. The main ones are JPG or (JPEG), GIF, PNG and BMP.

JPG is best for photos and e-mailing.
GIF is good for screenshot captures, transparent and animated graphics.
PNG is good for general web graphics (can also include some transparency)
BMP is what Windows Paint uses, and can be large, but is lossless.

Better explanations can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graphics_file_format

I hope this answers your questions.

Regards, Rich
