Data ranges and dates

I have a set of data. Each row of data has a date (or date range) assigned. How do I set something up so that I can choose an element of the data and then choose to look at a given monthly, quarterly or even yearly average?

Or you can create your own equation:

1) Insert and select the text box
2) On the Ribbon, click the Insert tab
