Hi Timothy

When choosing colours, always try and use websafe colours. Also make sure the page is accessible by people with poor vision i.e. do not use grey on grey.

With regards to layout, the most common at the moment is a 3 column design, so if you want want to blend in use that or if you want to stand out from the crowd you may want to consider using a different design.
