Hi Lorna,
The taskpane is designed to be used almost as an extra set of toolbars, and it gives you additional help on things like Clipart. This is common to all MS applications (2002/2003) There is a drop down menu at the top of the taskpane where you can view alternaitve settings. It is there as additional help. I agree I used to be taskpane-phobic but when you work with it you do find it is beneficial! I am now fully converted!
