Can I rename an attachment to an email before sending the email without having to save the attachment?

RE: Attachments

Hi Karen,

Thanks for your question. I hope you enjoyed the Outlook training. Sorry for the delay in getting back to you.

According to Microsoft, this is not usually possible:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940792

A discussion forum here also discusses that it's not possible with a standard outlook installation. However, (if you scroll to the very bottom of the page) you will see some code that may allow you to achieve the result. You may need some help setting up the code to get it to work.

Other research has people saying You can "only when composing in RTF-format. You can the choose Properties when you right click an attachment."
http://www.tech-archive.net/Archive/Outlook/microsoft.public.outlook/2004-07/6373.html
However, I wasn't able to replicate their claims.

And a technical explanation: "An attachment is not a file until you save it to disk. It's merely a string of Base 64 characters in the body of a message. Consequently it can have only the name contained in that same message body until you save it, rename it, then reattach it."

So it appears the answer to your questions is: "No". Sorry.

If this answer resolves your query, please mark the question as 'resolved' (see below). Otherwise, please post a follow-up response to this post, and I will assist you further.

Regards, Rich

Outlook tip:

Remove the Reading Pane from All Folders

If you are sick of the reading pane in Outlook 2003 popping up in your mail folders there is a way to globally disable it:

1. Right click the Outlook icon
2. Change the end of the command from /recycle to /nopreview.

The only problem is when Outlook applies certian updates it defaults it back but this isnt' very often.
