It is a fantastic function for <strong>List Management<\/strong> and saves me lots of time and stressing.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a simple example to demonstrate <strong>how to use filters in Excel.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I have my worksheet with details of budgeted items for a business trip. \u00a0I want to try and identify the one-off items to see if I can reduce those costs.<\/p>\n<p>Here is my worksheet with details of the items and units. \u00a0I want to filter the results by cost per person.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_820\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-820\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stl-training.co.uk\/b\/exceltraining\/files\/2012\/10\/budget-with-per-unit-excel-training-courses.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-820\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stl-training.co.uk\/b\/exceltraining\/files\/2012\/10\/budget-with-per-unit-excel-training-courses-300x152.png\" alt=\"budget-with-per-unit-excel-training-courses\" width=\"300\" height=\"152\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-820\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Here is my budget worksheet with the full list of items and costs.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I can filter the items by the ones that match my search criteria, by using the the <strong>Filter<\/strong> option in the <strong>Data tab<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_821\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-821\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stl-training.co.uk\/b\/exceltraining\/files\/2012\/10\/Data-tab-filter-excel-training-courses.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-821\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stl-training.co.uk\/b\/exceltraining\/files\/2012\/10\/Data-tab-filter-excel-training-courses-300x57.png\" alt=\"Data-tab-filter-excel-training-courses\" width=\"300\" height=\"57\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-821\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Data tab has the Filter option ready to go&#8230;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>To filter my budget, I put my cursor on the heading for <em>per unit<\/em>, and then click on the <strong>Filter<\/strong> icon. \u00a0I know the filter has been applied as down arrows appear next to the heading titles.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_822\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-822\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stl-training.co.uk\/b\/exceltraining\/files\/2012\/10\/filter-applied-headings-excel-training-courses.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-822\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stl-training.co.uk\/b\/exceltraining\/files\/2012\/10\/filter-applied-headings-excel-training-courses-300x156.png\" alt=\"filter-applied-headings-excel-training-courses\" width=\"300\" height=\"156\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-822\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Filters applied, and to show me that it&#8217;s ready to go, here are the little down arrows.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I select the down arrow next to the p<em>er unit<\/em>\u00a0heading<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_823\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-823\" style=\"width: 141px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stl-training.co.uk\/b\/exceltraining\/files\/2012\/10\/filter-options-excel-training-courses.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-823\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stl-training.co.uk\/b\/exceltraining\/files\/2012\/10\/filter-options-excel-training-courses.png\" alt=\"filter-options-excel-training-courses\" width=\"141\" height=\"154\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-823\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Filter options available to mix and match<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I select the<em> per person<\/em> filter, by removing the tick from\u00a0<em>select all<\/em> and then tick <em>per person<\/em>, and click OK. Here are my results.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_824\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-824\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stl-training.co.uk\/b\/exceltraining\/files\/2012\/10\/filter-per-person-excel-training-course.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-824\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stl-training.co.uk\/b\/exceltraining\/files\/2012\/10\/filter-per-person-excel-training-course-300x95.png\" alt=\"filter-per-person-excel-training-course\" width=\"300\" height=\"95\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-824\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The filter results confirm two items.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>When I want to see all my items listed again, I click on the down arrow next to heading and select <em>Clear filter from per unit.<\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_825\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-825\" style=\"width: 139px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stl-training.co.uk\/b\/exceltraining\/files\/2012\/10\/remove-filter-excel-training-courses.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-825\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stl-training.co.uk\/b\/exceltraining\/files\/2012\/10\/remove-filter-excel-training-courses.png\" alt=\"remove-filter-excel-training-courses\" width=\"139\" height=\"163\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-825\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">I can return to all my items by removing the filter.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<blockquote><p>Remember: It is possible to forget you have the filter on, and then have a minor moment of panic when you think you&#8217;ve lost data&#8230;I think Excel knows this can happen&#8230;.so look out for the down arrow next to your heading as a reminder.
