Unlike normal Excel charts, Sparklines are embedded in a single cell, making them ideal for displaying trends in sales figures, website hits, and other data over a period of time.<\/p>\n<p>In this blog post, we\u2019ll show you how to create and customise Sparklines in Excel, and provide some examples of how they can be used in different business roles and industries.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, sales managers can use Sparklines to track sales figures over time, while marketing professionals can use them to monitor website traffic. Sparklines can also be used in finance to track stock prices or in healthcare to monitor patient vitals.<\/p>\n<p>There are 3 types of Sparkline available, \u201cline\u201d, \u201ccolumn\u201d and \u201cWin\/Loss\u201d:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-6987 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stl-training.co.uk\/b\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Sparklines-1-231x300.png\" alt=\"How to Use Sparklines in Excel to Visualise Data Trends\" width=\"231\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stl-training.co.uk\/b\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Sparklines-1-231x300.png 231w, https:\/\/www.stl-training.co.uk\/b\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Sparklines-1.png 260w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 231px) 100vw, 231px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In the following example we see how a sales manager can quickly create Sparklines to easily analyse and compare performance across multiple sales regions.<\/p>\n<h2>Creating a Sparkline<\/h2>\n<p>Unlike a normal Excel chart that \u2018floats\u2019 on top of the spreadsheet, a Sparkline is embedded in a single cell. Go to INSERT &gt; SPARKLINES &gt; LINE<\/p>\n<p>3. In the \u2018Data Range\u2019 field, select all the cells containing numbers to the left of the selected cell. Reducing the July figure to 26 would result in just one marker for March \u2013 see below:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-6983 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stl-training.co.uk\/b\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/sparklines-6.png\" alt=\"How to Use Sparklines in Excel to Visualise Data Trends\" width=\"192\" height=\"80\" \/><\/p>\n<p>3. Now change the August figure to -5 and then change the type to WIN\/LOSS<\/p>\n<p>4. Untick \u2018High Point\u2019 and tick \u2018Negative Point\u2019<\/p>\n<p>5. Select a different Sparkline style to reflect RAG status colours (Red, Amber, Green) i.e. Red (negative values) and Green (positive values)<\/p>\n<p>Note the main purpose of the WIN\/LOSS Sparkline is to show which values are positive or negative \u2013 see below.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-6984 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stl-training.co.uk\/b\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/sparklines-7.png\" alt=\"How to Use Sparklines in Excel to Visualise Data Trends\" width=\"196\" height=\"83\" \/><\/p>\n<p>6. Change the type back to the default \u2018Sparkline\u2019 and set the following:<\/p>\n<p>a. Tick \u2018High point\u2019 and \u2018Low point\u2019<\/p>\n<p>b. Untick \u2018Negative points\u2019<\/p>\n<p>c. To edit the Sparklines, select any one within a single cell, do the edits and all of them will be changed as a group<\/p>\n<p>3. If you want to change one specific Sparkline without affecting the others, go to SPARKLINE &gt; GROUP &gt; UNGROUP<\/p>\n<h2>Deleting Sparklines<\/h2>\n<p>Unlike for normal charts and data generally, the delete button will not work for deleting Sparklines.<\/p>\n<p>Select the Sparklines and go to SPARKLINES &gt; GROUP &gt; CLEAR &gt; CLEAR SELECTED SPARKLINES<\/p>\n<h2>Conclusion<\/h2>\n<p>In conclusion, Sparklines are a great way to visualise data trends in Excel, and can be used in a variety of business roles and industries.
