You can use\u00a0the\u00a0<span class=\"ocpLegacyBold\" style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Count\u00a0<\/span>function to obtain\u00a0the number of values within a range, rather than the total of those values.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #363636;\">If we wanted to count the number of values between A1 and A7 we could use the formula<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #363636;\"><strong>=COUNT(A1:A7)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #363636;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stl-training.co.uk\/b\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Countfx.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2328\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stl-training.co.uk\/b\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Countfx-236x300.png\" alt=\"Countfx\" width=\"236\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #363636;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stl-training.co.uk\/b\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Countresult.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2329\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stl-training.co.uk\/b\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Countresult-232x300.png\" alt=\"Countresult\" width=\"232\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #363636;\">This has counted the number of values in the list.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #363636;\">If you have text in that range, <strong>Count<\/strong> behaves differently.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #363636;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stl-training.co.uk\/b\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Countntwrk.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2330\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stl-training.co.uk\/b\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Countntwrk-233x300.png\" alt=\"Countntwrk\" width=\"233\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #363636;\">The result is 6, because <strong>Count\u00a0<\/strong>has a limitation.\u00a0<strong>Count<\/strong> only returns the number of values present, it doesn&#8217;t include text.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #363636;\">To overcome this, we can use another, similar function,\u00a0<strong>CountA<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #363636;\">So the difference between Count and CountA in Excel is that CountA<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>will return the number of values and text in a list.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #363636;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stl-training.co.uk\/b\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Counta.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2331\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stl-training.co.uk\/b\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Counta-227x300.png\" alt=\"Counta\" width=\"227\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2332\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2332\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stl-training.co.uk\/b\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Countaresult.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2332 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stl-training.co.uk\/b\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Countaresult-235x300.png\" alt=\"Countaresult\" width=\"235\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2332\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">using count and counta in Excel will produce different results<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"color: #363636;\">If you need to find out have many numbers you have, use <strong>Count.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #363636;\">If you have text, or a mixture of text and values, use\u00a0<strong>CountA.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #363636;\">An example of <strong>CountA\u00a0<\/strong>could be when you require the total number of Staff in a list.
