{"id":1474,"date":"2012-12-05T14:58:05","date_gmt":"2012-12-05T14:58:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.microsofttraining.net\/b\/exceltraining\/?p=1474"},"modified":"2023-12-30T23:26:52","modified_gmt":"2023-12-30T23:26:52","slug":"how-to-recover-unsaved-work-in-excel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.stl-training.co.uk\/b\/how-to-recover-unsaved-work-in-excel\/","title":{"rendered":"How to recover unsaved work in Excel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Minor panic yesterday&#8230;I&#8217;d worked on an Excel file and quite possibly (you can take that as a yes) I hadn&#8217;t saved the changes. \u00a0I was a bit distracted at the time and seemed to have forgotten the basic Save.<\/p>\n<p>Excel is very forgiving like this. \u00a0It has a way that you can recover unsaved work. \u00a0Excel has it all figured out, with <strong>Versions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>So knowing that it is working with busy humans, Excel sets up auto-saving every so often \u00a0(and it doesn&#8217;t even tell you that it&#8217;s doing it&#8230;it just keeps on going in the background).<\/p>\n<p>So if you forget to save, you can access these auto saved versions of the worksheets. \u00a0You can access any file you saved without closing, or view versions where you forgot to close the file (Excel automatically saves these as drafts). \u00a0Now that is worth its weight in gold.<\/p>\n<p>You need the File menu for this, and select Info and then, the Versions section.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1475\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1475\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stl-training.co.uk\/b\/exceltraining\/files\/2012\/12\/file-versions-excel-courses.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1475\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stl-training.co.uk\/b\/exceltraining\/files\/2012\/12\/file-versions-excel-courses-300x245.png\" alt=\"file-versions-excel-courses\" width=\"300\" height=\"245\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1475\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Recovering unsaved files &#8211; thanks Excel.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The screen shows the unsaved version, so I can now open the workbook. \u00a0When I open it, it won&#8217;t replace the current version I have, so this is where I need to decide whether to replace the original with the current autosaved one, or not. \u00a0 Now, when I close the workbook, the autosaved version is deleted. \u00a0Phew. \u00a0Panic averted.<\/p>\n<p>Recovering unsaved work is included on our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stl-training.co.uk\/excel-2010-introduction.php\">excel course<\/a> &#8211; it really can help remove the oh-oh moments.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Minor panic yesterday&#8230;I&#8217;d worked on an Excel file and quite possibly (you can take that as a yes) I hadn&#8217;t saved the changes. \u00a0I was a bit distracted at the time and seemed to have forgotten the basic Save.
