{"id":114,"date":"2012-10-08T10:38:59","date_gmt":"2012-10-08T10:38:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.microsofttraining.net\/b\/wordtraining\/?p=114"},"modified":"2023-12-30T23:15:14","modified_gmt":"2023-12-30T23:15:14","slug":"contextual-tabs-in-word-2010-automatic-view-of-actions-available","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.stl-training.co.uk\/b\/contextual-tabs-in-word-2010-automatic-view-of-actions-available\/","title":{"rendered":"Contextual tabs in Word 2010 &#8211; automatic view of actions available"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m getting used to the Ribbon in Word 2010. \u00a0I started spotting something happening when I clicked on a piece of text or image in my document. \u00a0Not one to keep these things to myself, I will share them with you.<\/p>\n<p><em>The &#8220;ghost toolbar&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/em>Word 2010 has this little helper, so when I double click on a piece of text, no matter what tab I happen to be using at the time, Word gives me a mini toolbar with the common actions I might want to complete. It appears as a little <em>ghost toolbar<\/em> (not the correct technical term, but it is Halloween soon). Microsoft refers to this as the <strong>automatic view of actions available<\/strong>&#8230;but I prefer <em>the ghost toolbar<\/em> for now.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_116\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-116\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stl-training.co.uk\/b\/wordtraining\/files\/2012\/10\/screeen-shot-of-automatic-toolbar-word-2010.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-116 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.stl-training.co.uk\/b\/wordtraining\/files\/2012\/10\/screeen-shot-of-automatic-toolbar-word-2010-300x99.png\" alt=\"screeen-shot-of-automatic-toolbar-word-2010\" width=\"300\" height=\"99\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-116\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">I am using the References \u00a0tab. \u00a0I highlight a word, and the automatic toolbar option appears, with options to edit that selection using Home tab options. Cool isn&#8217;t it!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>So if I click on text, even if I am in the References tab, Word 2010 will give me options from the Home tab &#8211; like font size or paragraph alignment. \u00a0Saving me a few clicks (which added up over a working day, saves time and muscle fatigue).<\/p>\n<p><em>Working with Clip Art image<br \/>\n<\/em>I am still in the References tab, but when I double click on the Clip Art in my text, Word 2010 automatically changes the Ribbon showing, to the one I need for adjusting the image &#8211; the Picture Tools actions.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_118\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-118\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stl-training.co.uk\/b\/wordtraining\/files\/2012\/10\/Automatic-toolbar-ClipArt-Word-2010.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-118\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stl-training.co.uk\/b\/wordtraining\/files\/2012\/10\/Automatic-toolbar-ClipArt-Word-2010-300x160.png\" alt=\"Automatic-toolbar-ClipArt-Word 2010\" width=\"300\" height=\"160\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-118\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Working in the References tab, I click on my Clip Art image and the Ribbon automatically changes to the one I want. Fab!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em>Right click<\/em> <em>button<br \/>\n<\/em>Sometimes the left mouse button gets all the action, but here is a good use of the right mouse button.\u00a0If you select your section of text for editing, then right click, the menu options drop down for you to select easily. \u00a0<em>\u00a0<\/em>If I was working in the Mailings tab, and highlighted my text, and then used the right mouse click, I get options displayed from the Home tab for editing my text.<\/p>\n<p>These skills give you different ways to access what you need from the Ribbon. \u00a0It is something that is included in the\u00a0<strong>Introduction to Word 2010<\/strong>\u00a0course, and a skill you can easily build on with practise.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m going to keep experimenting and see what happens.<\/p>\n<p><em>Reference: Word\/Course &#8211; Working with the Ribbon<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m getting used to the Ribbon in Word 2010. \u00a0I started spotting something happening when I clicked on a piece of text or image in my document. \u00a0Not one to keep these things to myself, I will share them with you.
