{"id":1002,"date":"2012-11-06T14:10:07","date_gmt":"2012-11-06T14:10:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.microsofttraining.net\/b\/exceltraining\/?p=1002"},"modified":"2023-12-30T23:12:47","modified_gmt":"2023-12-30T23:12:47","slug":"get-more-out-of-autofill-in-excel-what-can-it-do","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.stl-training.co.uk\/b\/get-more-out-of-autofill-in-excel-what-can-it-do\/","title":{"rendered":"Get more out of Autofill in Excel &#8211; What can it do?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Autofill is rapidly becoming a new trick for me today. \u00a0I&#8217;ve used it to add weekdays, months of the year, and numbering columns. \u00a0But there is more to it than that and Excel offers a range of Autofill options.<\/p>\n<p>To get the full list of options, you need to find the Auto Fill Options\u00a0button. \u00a0In Excel 2010 this is located in the Home tab, in the Editing section.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Tip: If you use Autofill a lot, add it to your quick access toolbar for extra speedy autofilling!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1007\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1007\" style=\"width: 290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stl-training.co.uk\/b\/exceltraining\/files\/2012\/11\/The-Autofill-Options-button-in-the-Home-tab.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1007\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stl-training.co.uk\/b\/exceltraining\/files\/2012\/11\/The-Autofill-Options-button-in-the-Home-tab.png\" alt=\"Autofill excel online courses\" width=\"290\" height=\"113\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1007\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Autofill is hidden in the editing section in the Home tab.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Autofill will give you a list of options depending on the \u00a0type of data you are using. \u00a0In Excel this will include anything from text, to numbers and formulas. It does more than just series in text or numbers.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stl-training.co.uk\/b\/exceltraining\/files\/2012\/11\/autofill-shortcut-excel-online-courses.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1009 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stl-training.co.uk\/b\/exceltraining\/files\/2012\/11\/autofill-shortcut-excel-online-courses.png\" alt=\"autofill-shortcut-excel-online-courses\" width=\"101\" height=\"92\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When you are using autofill, the\u00a0<strong>fill handle\u00a0<\/strong>appears as a black square at the bottom right of the active cell.<br \/>\nAutofill options can also appear as a <strong>shortcut menu<\/strong>. \u00a0To view it, you need to click on the right mouse button, and drag the<strong>\u00a0fill handle<\/strong>\u00a0to an adjacent cells. Excel will give you a list of options to use.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What can Autofill do?\u00a0<\/strong>With Autofill, you can do the following:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Copy Cells\u00a0<\/strong>&#8211; a quick way to copy the content from one cell into more cells . For example a member of staff&#8217;s name or department.\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_1013\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1013\" style=\"width: 146px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stl-training.co.uk\/b\/exceltraining\/files\/2012\/11\/Autofill-copy-text-excel-online-courses.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1013 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.stl-training.co.uk\/b\/exceltraining\/files\/2012\/11\/Autofill-copy-text-excel-online-courses.png\" alt=\"Autofill-copy-text-excel-online-courses\" width=\"146\" height=\"205\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1013\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Autofill will copy text to save you typing it manually<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/li>\n<li><strong>Fill Series\u00a0<\/strong>&#8211; This can even include a combination of text and a number. \u00a0I could type Staff Member 1, and then use the Fill handle to complete the series automatically. \u00a0This is also useful for common series such as business quarters, and Excel will recognise the sequence even if you use standard abbreviations such as Qtr 1, Qtr 2, Qtr 3, Qtr 4.\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_1012\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1012\" style=\"width: 169px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stl-training.co.uk\/b\/exceltraining\/files\/2012\/11\/Autofill-text-and-number-excel-online-courses.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1012 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.stl-training.co.uk\/b\/exceltraining\/files\/2012\/11\/Autofill-text-and-number-excel-online-courses.png\" alt=\"Autofill-text-and-number-excel-online-courses\" width=\"169\" height=\"158\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1012\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Autofill text and number sequence<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/li>\n<li><strong>Fill Formatting Only\u00a0<\/strong>&#8211; a simple example could be filling a series of cells with a colour.\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_1014\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1014\" style=\"width: 164px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stl-training.co.uk\/b\/exceltraining\/files\/2012\/11\/Autofill-format-excel-online-course.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1014\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stl-training.co.uk\/b\/exceltraining\/files\/2012\/11\/Autofill-format-excel-online-course.png\" alt=\"Autofill-format-excel-online-course\" width=\"164\" height=\"222\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1014\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Autofill a format to save time<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/li>\n<li><strong>Fill Without Formatting &#8211;\u00a0<\/strong>for when you want to autofill without the formatting.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fill Days\u00a0<\/strong>&#8211; you can add days of the week including weekends.
